On September 5, Benita Veliz addressed the Democratic National Convention, marking the first time an undocumented immigrant spoke at a national political convention. Veliz praised President Barack Obama's support of the
Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors - or DREAM Act - a bill that would afford long-time undocumented youth the opportunity to pursue US citizenship.

Veliz's address came at the heels of President Obama's June 15
announcement to defer action on some of the country's pending deportation cases, which some have
coined "DREAM Act-lite". The new policy, issued by executive order, allows
certain US residents who entered the country before the age of 16 to be exempt from deportation by applying for a two-year work permit. Below, President Obama announces the policy, known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) plan:

According to the Immigration Policy Center, the new plan is
estimated to benefit around 940,000 immigrants ages 15 to 30 immediately. Over time, the Pew Hispanic Center
calculates that the policy could benefit up to 1.4 million unauthorised immigrants, including those currently enrolled in high school.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has called the DACA a pathway to amnesty. From his campaign site:
Mitt Romney opposes amnesty because he believes that it acts as a magnet encouraging illegal immigration. The last amnesty law passed in 1986 granted legal status to 2.7 million illegal immigrants. In the decades since, the illegal immigrant population has quadrupled. Mitt believes that an amnesty should not be permitted to happen again. Illegal immigrants who apply for legal status should not be given any advantage over those who are following the law and waiting their turn. Mitt absolutely opposes any policy that would allow illegal immigrants to “cut in line.”Immigration | Mitt Romney for President
Governor Romney opposes all magnets” that entice illegal immigrants to come to our country. As governor, he vetoed in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants and opposed driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants.Immigration | Mitt Romney for President
In the past, Romney has said that he would veto DREAM Act legislation, should it pass in Congress.

Romney has also advocated for a policy of "self-deportation" that has drawn criticism from members of his own party.

Romney's campaign platform makes no mention of "self-deportation," but does emphasise higher efficiency for visa and green card applications, a high-tech border fence, and employer verification of immigration status.
Mitt Romney will develop an effective, mandatory employment verification system that will enable employers to be sure that those they hire are eligible to work. This will discourage illegal immigrants from coming to America to seek jobs.Immigration | Mitt Romney for President
Similarly, some of the key measures of the Obama administration's immigration
plan include increased investment in border control staff and the endorsement of an
E-verify system , which enables employers and law enforcement to check a person's immigration status. The six-part plan also highlights improved pathways to citizenship and naturalisation, as well as the economic benefits of immigration.
Still, under the current administration, more than 1 million immigrants have been deported.

Conservative-backed Principles in Action responded to these numbers by dubbing President Obama the Deporter-in-Chief:

PolitiFact
evaluated the above advertisement as a "half-truth", saying that while deportation has spiked under Obama, he has not yet deported more immigrants than any other US president.
According to current figures from Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- the federal agency responsible for deportations -- Obama has removed 1.4 million people during his 42 months in office so far. Technically, that's fewer than under George W. Bush, whose cumulative total was 2 million.PolitiFact | Has Barack Obama deported more people than any other president in U.S. history?
If you instead compare the two presidents’ monthly averages, it works out to 32,886 for Obama and 20,964 for Bush, putting Obama clearly in the lead. Bill Clinton is far behind with 869,676 total and 9,059 per month. All previous occupants of the White House going back to 1892 fell well short of the level of the three most recent presidents.PolitiFact | Has Barack Obama deported more people than any other president in U.S. history?
PolitiFact's article does note that, if Obama should win a second term, he may very well surpass George W. Bush's number of total deportations. They also say that recent deportations can be carry-overs from past immigration policy:
Boosting the number of deportations in recent years are a program dating to the Bush years that targets "fugitive" aliens, as well as a program known as Secure Communities, under which federal immigration authorities are kept apprised of people who are fingerprinted at the state and local level.PolitiFact | Has Barack Obama deported more people than any other president in U.S. history?
Latinos have responded with wariness towards the presidential candidate. A 2011 Pew Hispanic Center study
found that a majority of Latinos - 59 per cent - disapproved of the president's deportation policies. Among registered Latino voters, this sentiment remained strong, with 52 per cent of voters in disapproval.

Alternatively, following the recent Republican National Convention (RNC), which featured at least nine Latino speakers, Latino voters viewed the Republican Party in a more positive light.

Still, some netizens expressed doubts about the representation of immigration issues at the RNC.

Ahead of both the RNC and the DNC, Hispanic groups have mobilised to pressure both the Republican and Democratic parties. The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda released their own platform on immigration reform.
Outside of the DNC, a large group of undocumented immigrants protested, asking politicians to defend what they see as a right to stay in the country. Some of the protesters were from the
Undocubus campaign, which bused several undocumented immigrants from Arizona to the convention. Participants risked deportation by coming out with their immigration status.

The Undocubus campaign
expressed their intent to protest at the DNC rather than the previous week's Republican Convention, in the hopes of holding the Obama administration accountable for its record on deportations.
Following Wednesday's DNC speeches, netizens did not seem as optimistic:
