The murder of 32-year-old Puerto Rican José Enrique Gómez, pictured below, has led thousands to mobilise online against increasing violence in the territory. Gomez was allegedly kidnapped, beaten and set on fire in an area south of San Juan.

The island has seen a spike in violent crime in recent years, with more than 1,100 murders reported in 2011.
